Explore Kansas Treasure Stories Welcome to Kansas, the birthplace of Amelia Earhart, the home of fictional Dorothy Gale who was carried by a tornado to the Land of Oz, and the breadbasket of the world with its abundancy of billowing wheat fields. In Kansas, the best of the Wild West is depicted in the once lawless and infamous Dodge City, which was settled by gunslingers, gamblers, and cattlemen, inspiring such characters as Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson to take charge and clean up the town. In the mid 1850's, abolitionists from the New England region and pro-slavery settlers from neighboring Missouri clashed as they rushed to claim Kansas. Chaos and violence erupted, and the state became known as "Bleeding Kansas." Lying in the great central plain of the U.S., Kansas is almost perfectly flat, and the only state east of it that receives more sunshine on average is Florida. Recently Kansas, as well as five other Midwest states (Oklahoma, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa), have fallen victim to a phenomenon called "Rural Flight" as people head for larger cities and more job opportunities, especially the college-educated, leaving the state with more than 6,000 ghost towns, and offers of free land and tax breaks to entice newcomers to relocate to Kansas. |
