Lunging Island Treasure of Blackbeard. During high tides, the two halves of Lunging are separated by a foot or two of seawater that rises over the exact spot where Prudy Randall says Blackbeard left his treasure and one of his wives never to return again. Historian Robert Cahill also makes this claim in his book "New England's Pirates and Lost Treasures." Prudy believes there was a cave there that has since collapsed or been covered somehow by nearly 300 years of storms and tides. After the great war, she explains, the U.S. Government was looking for buried treasure and spotted the hidden cave by air using some sort of sonar device. Also, later around the 1950s, a man from a quarrying company performed tests that indicated that a cave with possibly buried ingots were hidden there, although the exact details of the findings are unclear. The ghosts of Blackbeard and his wife have allegedly been seen both in this area and on Smuttynose Island, and many claim to hear the wife whispering "He will return." A televised search for the treasure was recently made. (Read "In Search of Blackbeard's Treasure") (Map of Lunging Island at Isle of Shoals)
